Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common heart rhythm abnormality affecting people of all ages. AFib occurs when the normal heart beat is overrun by ultra-rapid and chaotic electrical impulses within the top chambers of the heart causing an irregular and at times fast heart beat. Symptoms may include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, chest discomfort and overall lack of stamina. Afib may also be “silent”, when the condition is not recognized by the person affected. The greatest risk of AFib is that of a stroke as blood clots can form within the heart.

The good news is that AFib can be readily diagnosed with an electrocardiogram (ECG) or various forms of monitoring. We specialize in the treatment of AFib at Ramirez Sports Cardiology and Arrhythmia. More and more clinical studies are revealing that the sooner AFib is treated, the greater the chances of controlling the disorder, which can improve both quality of life and longevity.

Catheter ablation of AFib. Abnormal electrical signals are isolated within the left atrium.

Pulse field ablation or PFA is the latest technology available to treat AFib. High voltage pulsed electricity is applied using a catheter in the left atrium to destroy heart tissue causing AFib.

Ablation using PFA provides for a more efficient procedure and reduces the risk of collateral damage to other non-cardiac tissues. Call us today to discuss your AFib and whether a catheter ablation is right for you.
