Arrhythmias are caused by short circuits or electrical irritability of the heart’s normal beat. Cardiac ablation is a catheter-based procedure that treats focal areas of the heart, to correct abnormal heart rhythms.

Pacemakers are implanted in the heart when the heart beats too slow. The pacemaker prevents the heart from slowing below the programmed pulse rate, usually 60 beats per minute. Pacemakers do not shock the heart.
Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) are required in conditions that may be complicated by cardiac arrest, such as prior heart attacks or hearts whose contraction function is severely reduced. If the heart should beat dangerously fast (>220 beats per minute), the ICD will deliver a shock and normalize the rhythm, thereby preventing cardiac arrest. All ICD devices can pace the heart as well.
